The Ultimate Guide to Choosing Your Perfect Dress Color

In my opinion, choosing your wedding colors is one of the hardest wedding decisions you’ll have to make. If you’re anything like me, you’re indecisive, overwhelmed by the amount of gorgeous color options, and your color preferences change on a weekly basis. How’s a girl to choose!?

Because bridesmaid dresses are such a huge focus on the wedding day, it’s important that you choose a dress color that you really love. Fortunately, I’ve got some simple tips to help you narrow down your options to pin-point the perfect palette for your big day! (If it makes you feel better, I even used these tips for determining my own wedding palette and I’m slightly obsessed with it!)

9 Things To Consider Before Choosing Your Bridesmaid Dress Color(s)

1. Find your inspiration. Sometimes all it takes is one picture to really inspire the color palette for you wedding day! Create a wedding Pinterest board (if you haven’t already), and start pinning photos that really inspire you. I did this same exercise and my photos had an obvious trend of mild blue, green, and white tones so that’s the palette that I’m going with.

2. Location is key! Your venue will literally set the stage for your wedding day so choose colors that complement the space.

3. Consider your own personal style. If you’re a minimalist who loves neutral, earthy colors, having a pink and orange wedding would be a bit out of your element. Same goes if you love color! But hold on -- we’ll be specifically talking about Kennedy Blue’s colors and how they can adapt to your own style later on!

4. Ask your fiancé. They may have a strong preference of what they do or absolutely do not want. Be considerate.

5. Consider the color of your bridal gown. Whatever color or style you choose, keep that color in mind so that your bridesmaid’s won’t clash while standing next to you.

6. Be mindful of the dress color and skin tones. Also, be careful not to choose colors that are going to wash out certain skin tones or make them look too flushed.

7. Consider the season. Fuschia might not be the best choice for a winter wedding and deep greens are usually suited for fall or winter.

8. Consider multiple bridesmaid dress colors. Ombre and mix-and-match trends are huge now, so it’s not uncommon to see a variety of color in the bridal party. We just had a group of bridesmaids order varying shades of greens and blues in the Luella dress! Need some mix and match color inspiration? Check out our blog on mixing bridesmaid dress colors.

9. Find your ideal bridesmaid dress(es). If you’re having trouble narrowing it down, find a designer or dress style you absolutely love and work with whatever colors they have available. Even though Kennedy Blue has a large variety of styles, fabrics, and colors, you can chose the one that better suits you and your girls. We have over 90 styles in fabrics such as chiffon, lace, embroidery, and more, and also we have fabric swatches so you can wear different textures according to your needs.

The 411 On Wedding Color Palettes

Color palettes are super important for having consistency on the wedding day – between the dresses, décor, flowers, etc. It’s easy to get carried away with too many colors, but I recommend that you choose at least three main colors for your palette.

Choosing your color palette really isn’t as difficult as it sounds. It’s important to just stay true to your style or figure out what visually inspires you.

For example, if you’re inspired by nature, incorporate earthy tones that are serene and natural. Or if you want to take traditional elements from the city, consider more industrial materials and colors. Just remember to keep it simple and beautiful.

When creating your color palette, consider the 60-30-20 rule -- 60% of a primary color, 30% of a secondary color, and 10% of an accent color. Primary colors should be used for the bridesmaid dresses, men’s attire, invitations, and elements throughout the décor, but try not to abuse of the color. Secondary colors can be used within the flowers, décor, linens, and bridal party accessories. And the accent colors can be used within the flowers, centerpieces or highlight elements.
